Time-Variable Refraction of the Internal Tide at the Hawaiian Ridge

چکیده
The interaction of the dominant semidiurnalM2 internal tide with the large-scale subtidal flow is examined in an ocean model by propagating the tide through an ensemble of background fields in a domain centered on theHawaiianRidge. The background fields are taken from the SimpleOceanDataAssimilation (SODA) ocean analysis, at 2-month intervals from 1992 through 2001. Tides are computed with the Primitive Equation Z-coordinate Harmonic Analysis of Tides (PEZ-HAT) model by 14-day integrations using SODA initial conditions and M2 tidal forcing. Variability of the tide is found to occur primarily as the result of propagation through the nonstationary background fields, rather than via generation site variability. Generation of incoherent tidal variability is mapped and shown to occur mostly in association with waves generated at French Frigate Shoals scattering near the Musicians Seamounts to the north of the ridge. The phasecoherent internal tide loses energy at a domain-average rate of 2mWm by scattering into the nonstationary tide. Because of the interference of waves from multiple generation sites, variability of the internal tide is spatially inhomogeneous and values of the scattering rate 10 times larger occur in localized areas. It is estimated that 20% of the baroclinic tidal energy flux is lost by adiabatic scattering (refraction) within 250 km of the ridge, a value regarded as a lower bound because of the smoothed nature of the SODA fields used in this study.

Incoherent Nature of M2 Internal Tides at the Hawaiian Ridge
Moored current, temperature, and conductivity measurements are used to study the temporal variability of M2 internal tide generation above the Kaena Ridge, between the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Kauai. The energy conversion from the barotropic to baroclinic tide measured near the ridge crest varies by a factor of 2 over the 6-month mooring deployment (0.5–1.1 W m). The energy flux measured ju...
متن کاملObservations of Enhanced Diapycnal Mixing near the Hawaiian Ridge
Profiles of potential density obtained from CTD casts at two stations at different distances from the Hawaiian ridge are examined for evidence of diapycnal turbulent mixing as indicated by density inversions and internalwave vertical strain. Results from independent casts are used to produce ensemble-averaged vertical distributions for the number of inversions and the Thorpe scale. Both paramet...

Full-depth velocity and density profiles taken along the 3000-m isobath characterize the semidiurnal internal tide and bottom-intensified turbulence along the Hawaiian Ridge. Observations reveal baroclinic energy fluxes of 21 5 kW m 1 radiating from French Frigate Shoals, 17 2.5 kW m 1 from Kauai Channel west of Oahu, and 13 3.5 kW m 1 from west of Nihoa Island. Weaker fluxes of 1–4 2 kW m 1 ra...
متن کاملAn examination of the radiative and dissipative properties of deep ocean internal tides
In this study, the energy flux and energy dissipation of deep ocean internal tides are examined. Properties of the internal tide from two distinct generation regions are contrasted: the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and the Hawaiian Ridge. Considerable differences are noted for the baroclinic energy flux, hu0p0i; radiated from each site. Radiation from the MAR is relatively rich in high modes, with ...
متن کاملFrom tides to mixing along the Hawaiian ridge.
The cascade from tides to turbulence has been hypothesized to serve as a major energy pathway for ocean mixing. We investigated this cascade along the Hawaiian Ridge using observations and numerical models. A divergence of internal tidal energy flux observed at the ridge agrees with the predictions of internal tide models. Large internal tidal waves with peak-to-peak amplitudes of up to 300 met...
